Futuresonic 2009 and the Social Technologies Summit will take place 13-16 May 2009, featuring world premieres of astonishing artworks, an explosive city-wide music programme, and visionary thinkers from around the world. The festival has four strands – Art, Music, Ideas and EVNTS – and occupies the orbits of art, performance, music, design and digital culture. Now in its 14th year, Futuresonic is the UK’s leading festival for digital culture, and this year was nominated for the prestigious Lever Arts Prize. The Senso concept is designed for an early to a moderately severe stage of dementia. Senso makes it possible for the sufferer to remember names of people again or to find the familiar way back home again. It will help dementia sufferers to retain their independence as long as possible and will calm situations in which the patient feels helpless and lost.

To ensure that using the Senso products becomes as natural and normal as using a phone, they have to be used from the very early stages of dementia. From this point came the idea of designing a product which corresponds to a universal design and appeals to a broader target group. If people have learned very early on to use the product, they will also be more able to remember and count on it in the event of dementia. This preventative function of the Senso concept is of great importance, as demographic changes show that in the future, there will be less people able to take care of the growing number of elderly.

The borders between reality and virtuality are becoming ever more permeable, and because of new connection elements, in many aspects these worlds are beginning to merge. These interfaces and the interaction between people and machines, continues to gain in relevance. As cyberspace continues to develop in the form of improved 3D worlds and with both new digital tools and ways of interacting and controlling physical objects, a new era in the digital age has begun. Products providing these new interfaces are successful, as demonstrated by the iPhone. Products are available which transport virtual content to real worlds as are products which register information about physical activities, make an assessment and connect to virtual communities.

Mike Kuniavski, the curator of ISEA’s interactive C4f3, picked up his five favourite projects of the festival.

In Mike’s words: The basic notion is to use the power of networked digital technology and inexpensive storage to keep aspects of us alive after we’re dead. On one conceptual level, it externalizes the network of memories and documents we leave behind, and places them into a digital world, which is projected into the physical one as a shipping container sarcophagus filled. The sarcophagus is simultaneously a display, an environment and metaphor, and as it ages, etoy will replace the LEDs with the ashes of the people whose digital selves they manage.

AirPiano

The AirPiano is an innovative musical interface which allows playing and
controlling software instruments simply by moving hands in the air.

Above the AirPiano is a virtual matrix of keys and faders, each assigned with MIDI messages
and ready to be triggered. The length of a triggered note is equivalent to the time a hand 
is placed on the corresponding virtual key.
This is also confirmed by LED feedback.
